What’s the difference between Zincalume and Colorbond Roofs?

Written on the 29 June 2022 by MRA Roofing & Construction

Here at MRA Roofing and Construction we use both BlueScope Steel Zincalume and Colorbond products for our roofing projects. We believe that these are premium products and wouldn’t use anything else. But let us tell you a little more about these two options and the differences so that you can choose appropriately.

Prior to the 1960’s corrugated roofing was an option, however it corroded easily and required frequent painting, which led to the development of the two products that we use being Colorbond and Zincalume.

Deciding on the right material for your roofing project first begins with the climate in which you are living and secondly with the design of your structure.  As the main barrier between the outside climate and the interior of your building, it is an important decision.

What is Zincalume?

The Zincalume product is a combination of aluminum, zinc and silicon materials which are combined to create a very durable, recyclable and environmentally friendly roofing option. Zincalume is commonly used in commercial and industrial projects as it retains it natural, rugged appearance.

Pros

  • Extremely durable
  • Made from environmentally friendly recycled materials
  • Cost effective solution for steel roofing – however due to recent market shortages on raw materials, Zincalume has had a price increase.

Cons

  • No colour choices
  • Susceptible to weather damage and worn appearance

What is Colorbond?

Colorbond is a pre-painted steel roofing that is strong, durable, light weight and comes in a wide range of colours that can suit multiple home designs. In recent times Colorbond had a more expensive initial outlay, however with market shortages on Zincalume, their price is only slightly higher. However, Colorbond does retain its’ look and protection for a great many years, maintaining the value of your home.

Pros

  • Thermal efficiency
  • Weather, corrosion, termite and pest resistant
  • Low maintenance
  • Longevity
  • 22 colour variations

Cons

  • Slightly more expensive than competitor products

Both products will provide an excellent long-term protection for your structure, whether that be for industrial, commercial, or home roof, so depending on your needs and the outcome that you are after will dictate the best product to use.
